One of the videos in the appendix is Modi’s election campaign speech at Bengaluru in 2014. He roundly criticizes the Sham ID, called “Aadhaar” and calls it a corrupt scheme. In another video two years later in 2016, he praises the same Sham ID, called “Aadhaar” as very useful. Why do our leaders, politicians of all hues, activists, people in general – the so-called ‘aam aadmi’, authors, intellectuals, business persons, and media personalities exhibit this behavior?

I have often wondered about this peculiarly Indian phenomenon. Then one day, I recalled reading an excellent book which answered the question quite well, though in part, a substantial part.

This book has the arresting title, “Games Indians Play” (that is apart from IPL cricket and Kabaddi). V Raghunathan is its author. It follows a similar title of another book, one on a branch of psychology, “transactional analysis”, by Eric Berne, “Games People Play.”
